FORM ANALYSIS: POLAR BEAR CREATURE MARK
OBJECTIVE I—
To graphically interpret a creature using fundamental elements of design and to communicate a set number of unique physical, behavioral, and personality traits.
INITIAL RESEARCH
To design an interpretation of my chosen creature—a polar bear—I began to explore its physical and habitual traits.
Narrow face and pointed snout.
The face of a polar bear is characterized by a narrow snout, small dark eyes, and a large black nose. Its streamlined head and rounded ears conserve heat and aid in swimming, while its strong jaws and sharp teeth reflect its hunting nature.
Rounded body and defined stance.
The body of a polar bear is large, muscular, and built for survival in the harsh Arctic. Its long neck and powerful limbs support strong swimming abilities, while large, wide paws help it walk on snow and ice and paddle through water.
Solitary creatures and strong swimmers.
Polar bears rely on sea ice as a platform for hunting, making them a key arctic predator. They are fast swimmers and can travel long distances between glaciers and coastal areas.
BRAINSTORMING
Continuing on from my initial research, I began to ideate the traits surrounding a polar bear through sketching.
SKETCHING
Concept sketches exploring the process from the literal to the implied form of a polar bear.
DIGITAL ITERATIONS
Following my initial sketches, each iteration follows the same process: literal to implied.
The final polar bear retains its natural form without the need for a graphic illustration. Instead, the polar bear is only defined by geometric shapes, positive and negative space, and asymmetrical balance.

INCORPORATING TYPOGRAPHY
To communicate the meaning of a concept/phrase complimentary to the initial creature mark by exploring the visual form typography can have on further defining the original system.
OBJECTIVE II—
CONCEPT + TYPOGRAPHY
THE SOLITARY GIANT CONQUERS THE GLACIER.
Monte Stella is a constructed modular display sans typeface with deliberate imperfection and a planted stance. Its extreme visual impact rises off the page as it mimics the idea of an immense glacier towering over the Arctic Circle.
TYPOGRAPHIC IDEATION
Implementing my concept through visual forms of type.
A main goal of this project is to format the composition around the Fibonacci Proportion. As the concept unfolds, typography leads the eye from left to right of the composition toward the final creature mark.

The final composition blends type, line, and shape to visually define the physical and habitual attributes of a polar bear.
